Setting up your wireless internet comes with its own set of instructions. But that doesn’t make connectivity any bit easier to do. Today’s wireless routers and networking products aren’t always the most helpful either.

To improve your security and your connection you’ll have to make a couple of changes. These tips will guide you through the steps of point to point wireless setup.

1. Make Sure Every AP Works

It’s very easy to overlook issues individual devices have during AP installations. APs won’t work when the wiring or configuration is incorrectly done. Single-APs have issues that you may not notice when you are generally using the network or doing a network check.

Which is why you must catch those issues early on.

You’ll want to be able to diagnose issues with your AP. After you plug in each AP at its mounting location, ensure that the power is up, that the status light is operating normally, and that you’re connected. This must happen for every AP you install.

Take a look at the signal level of the AP on the device you use to test the APs. You’ll want to confirm that you’re connected to the right AP. If so, you should see perfect signal levels.

2. Check the SSID

There is usually a default SSID on manufactured devices. The default name of a network usually matches the name of the device. For example, the network name for a Linksys device is usually “Linksys”. And you’ll want to protect your point to point wireless network.

Changing the SSID can protect you from any attacks on your wireless router. Networks with different virtual LANs and SSIDs have a greater possibility of misconfiguring settings on the router, switch or AP.

For example, you can accidentally open up private VLANs to a guest VLAN. If you assign each SSID to a single VLAN then the tagging could misconfigure.

You can avoid this by testing each AP, making sure that it operates. You can also go a step further and make sure the VLANs are configured. After the AP installation, connect to each SSID and ensure the end-user devices have an IP address assigned from that VLAN.

Ping between end-user devices on one VLAN and end-user devices on another VLAN. This can help ensure that the inter-VLAN routing setting isn’t enabled by mistake. It can also make sure that the firewall is blocking users access to other VLANs.

3. Run Speed Tests

It’s a great idea to run speed tests while connected to every AP and every SSID. Both will give you the speeds of uploading and downloading. This can help you know about any bandwidth limits such as on the guest SSID or any accidental limits on a private network.

You can use Speedtest.net or NetStress or LAN Speed Test to help determine your point to point wireless performance.

Choosing a Point to Point Wireless Network has its Benefits

You can save money and increase your security.

Point to point wireless also links businesses in multiple locations at impressive speeds.

Once you follow these tips to analyze your network’s system, you can successfully install your next point to point wireless network.
