Point to Multi-point wireless, or P2MP wireless, is a relatively new term that’s gaining widespread acceptance for its simplicity…and effectiveness. Yet, you may know little to nothing about it.

With the advent of increased video surveillance needs across North America driven by cyber-security, personal safety and overall public acceptance of cameras in public view, the need to connect multiple sites to a single source has exploded. Previously, it was expensive and time-consuming to install and connect multiple video camera locations. But not any longer. NOT with a P2MP deployment.

So what exactly is P2MP wireless? We’re going to answer that for you in this article, as well as why your business would benefit from the use of wireless Point to Multi-Point.

So What Exactly Is Point to Multi-Point Wireless?

Point to multi-point wireless is actually a lot simpler to understand than you may think.

Put simply, P2MP is when a wireless radio ‘base station’ is used to connect to multiple locations at once. Unlike WiFi, these new P2MP systems allow transfer speeds of up to 1 Gbps up to 300 meters away. And as long as you have clear line of sight back to the base station, you can connect a total of 8 distinct locations within a 90-degree field of view.

Sounds pretty slick, doesn’t it? But wait, what about interference? That’s the biggest issue most people have when trying to deploy a WiFi system in this manner. How does Point to Multi-point overcome interference?

This might be the slickest part of this system. Utilizing the unlicensed FCC frequency band between 56-64 GHz, the base station transmits and receives at EIGHT different frequencies within that band. Each remote terminal has its own isolated channel for clean, clear and reliable connections. And TA- DAH…no, not magic. Just no interference.

So what’s the best application for wireless P2MP? Connecting multiple high-definition 4K cameras. Or, connecting multiple buildings to the main network site within a campus setting. Or another, connecting a row of rental properties back to a mainhub to maximize rental fees.

Because of the way the base station and remote terminals are set up, it’s very simple and quick to install, and A LOT cheaper than digging up streets to lay fiber to connect the multiple sites.

Of course, it is a wireless connection, and there are factors to consider as you’re installing the units. Other buildings, trees, and environmental factors affect the system design. But installed correctly? You’ll have a reliable, commercial grade solution that will last in all elements for 6+ years.

How Exactly Can It Help Me?

There are so many ways that this technology can benefit your business, but we’ll just list a few here.

  1. Save some serious money. One of the most important things is that you no longer need to pay for recurring connection bills to multiple locations. You buy and own the technology that you need for the lowest price. Going the traditional landline route is expensive and rarely will connect at the same speed.
  2. Increase speed. Have you priced out how much a 1/10 Gbps leased line costs on a monthly basis? Now multiply that by X for the number of buildings/4K cameras you want to connect. Can you even GET a 1 Gbps landline speed to your locations? With a P2MP system like this one from Siklu, you most certainly can.
  3. Increase control. When you add multiple sites, it often feels like it can get very complicated, very quickly. But the best P2MP systems available have management access to EVERY SINGLE location. Meaning you can monitor performance for each site, see if all data is passing cleanly and if any data packets might be dropping. By just logging into the base station that connects to the remote sites.

Its new, its hot and wireless P2MP is definitely a big deal. If you haven’t looked into it already, it’s about time you did.
